In September 2019 it is 75 years ago that Valkenburg, as one of the first places in the Netherlands, was liberated from the German occupiers. American Allies in particular were stationed in Valkenburg and surroundings for a long time. Only after months of long and fierce battle was the rest of the Netherlands liberated.
75 years of liberation will be the subject of extensive attention in the Netherlands, also in Valkenburg aan de Geul. An exhibition will be organized in Museum Valkenburg specifically about the liberation of Valkenburg and surroundings.
In mid-January we will make an appeal via our website to the local population to pass on stories about the liberation of Valkenburg and to lend out pictures, curios and other testimonies of the Liberation Days in September 1944 for the exhibition in the museum.
