HUB LEVIGNE
Born: Meerssen 1905 – Deceased: Sittard 1989
South Limburg landscape.
The artist produced this work – from the depot of the National Service for Cultural Heritage in Rijswijk – in 1937.
This painting was exhibited in the Dutch Pavilion at the 1937 World Exhibition, or “International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques la Vie Moderne”, in Paris. The then minister of Education, Culture and Science J.R. Slotemaker de Bruine performed the official opening. It is very nice to view images and sound of that opening on the internet via “Opening of the Dutch Pavilion World Exhibition 1937” in Paris. Unfortunately, this work cannot be seen on screen.
This painting, 2.70 m high and 2.00 m wide, is currently on display in the museum during the exhibition: “Limburgers in Amsterdam – a look back at the exhibition in 1954 in the Stedelijk Museum” and is an ode to the Limburg landscape.
