Until August 8, we have the exhibition ‘Ondersteboven’ by Esther van den Brink in Museum Valkenburg. During an exhibition we always highlight a work of art on our website, this time ‘Guusje’.
Esther van den Brink lives in Maastricht, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts there and works in her studio in Kasteel Oost in Valkenburg.
She explains: “This work is one of the entries for the international Illustrator competition ‘Picture This!’ from publisher Lemniscaat. It is an incentive prize for still unknown illustrators. With this I became one of the 3 Dutch winners, and since then it has brought me a lot of good! (I signed a contract with publisher “Billy Bones” for a whole new children’s book series, called “Knots” by Tijs van Marle, the first part will be released on June 23. It is an illustration from a self-written book that has yet to be published, about a little girl (Guusje) who is always ruled by the clock, every time she is doing something fun she has to stop because it is “time.” To escape from this, she crawls through a hole in the hedge in a playground and ends up in a dream world where time does not exist… My illustrations I always make analog, so with pencils, watercolor paint, gouache or ink, and then usually a small digital retouch follows.”
