Museum Valkenburg is also currently closed due to the Corona crisis. The special retrospective exhibition of the work of the Limburg painter and draftsman Harrie Bartels (1936-2015) is unfortunately not visible.
Now that we are all forced to sit behind the geraniums, we want to highlight a popular theme in Bartels’ work: the window paintings. For several years he mainly painted the view from his home in many variants. It provided nice vistas. The window frames, the window glass, the houses across the street, the tree in front of the window, the sky, Harrie experimented a lot until he finally found the right composition. Although the image is always the same, we surprisingly often see different colors, shapes and lines.
There was a great demand for the paintings and many art lovers brought home a work. Yet Bartels closed the “window period” at some point and never came back to it.
