On Wednesday 3 July, alderman Remy Meijers unveiled a monolith at the prehistoric flint mine on Plenkertstraat in Valkenburg. It is a large chunk of flint with a fracture probably caused by an earthquake. There is a red discolouration on both sides of the flint caused by the oxidation of water that has seeped through the years.
It is expressly intended that visitors and passers-by touch the stone to come into contact with our distant ancestors.
Hub Pisters of the foundation In onsen Lande van Valckenborgh gave the interested parties text and explanation.
In our museum you will find an extensive collection of flints. Interested parties are also periodically given information about this fascinating primal raw material.
