The Limburg landscape is unthinkable without the countless churches, chapels and crosses. For centuries they have drawn the attention of the passerby in a picturesque way. It used to be places where a candle was lit, where a cross was made and kneeled. The Roman Catholic faith played a self-evident leading role in Limburg society for centuries.
Children grew up with it. The career of countless artists, musicians and architects was determined by it.
But times changed.
Churches were closed, monastery communities were aging. The care for the large and small religious monuments remained. Monumental churches are being restored, crosses are painted and chapels a new roof. Grandma’s cross got a place in the grandchildren’s new house, the artworks from churches and monastery buildings were donated to museums.
Chapels and crosses now mainly form picturesque elements in the landscape.
But for many walkers they are still the perfect place to pause.
They like to think about it.
